A broad board, 60 x 60 x 3 cm (about 24 in), gives two players room to spread out on this lion head backgammon set (nardi), and it is carved from one piece of beech. A lion’s head is engraved on it together with arched panels, and the board has a dark finish.
Within Armenian pictographic signs and heraldic emblems, the lion holds a well-established place, and it stands for inspiration and courage. On the coat of arms of Armenia, it is the lion, together with an eagle, that holds up the shield. A game of draughts completes the picture, since the reverse of the board is intended for it.
