Two games share one 50 cm (about 20 in) board in this Mount Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi), a generous size that leaves the pieces plenty of room. Cut whole from one piece of beech, the board is decorated with our copyrighted Ararat outline, and carved letters and numbers mark out the chess field.
Mount Ararat itself rises in present-day Turkey, close to the Armenian border. On this board, chess leaves everything to the players, while backgammon, by most accounts among the very oldest of games, joins chance with reasoning and favours whoever thinks flexibly, plans the order of moves and decides without delay. At this size the set suits a dining table, where others can follow the game as well.
