Only 30 x 30 x 3 cm (about 12 in) in size, this carpet classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) fits a shelf or a bedside table and still holds two complete games. Its board, carved from one piece of beech wood, is engraved with patterns used in Armenian carpets, and bronze-cast letters and numbers serve as the chess coordinates.
Armenian rugs were made as gifts and as commemorative pieces, and this board borrows its ornament from them. Backgammon is a game for two, with fifteen checkers a side moving around twenty-four points; it has a reputation as one of the oldest games of all and rewards flexible thinking, sharp calculation and quick decisions.
