The carving of this Armenian carpet chess and backgammon set (nardi) starts from one piece of beech wood, and the finished 60 cm (about 24 in) board is engraved with patterns found in Armenian carpets. This version shows a dark dotted pattern, and its chess field is marked by letters and numbers in cast bronze.
Armenian rugs covered floors and decorated walls and furniture; on this board their patterns move from the home onto the games table. Backgammon, which is said to be among the most ancient games, is at its core a game of logic: players weigh their options, calculate a sequence of moves and commit quickly. Chess, its partner here, adds a contest with no luck in it at all.
