Beech wood, carved in one piece, forms this 60 cm (about 24 in) Armenian carpet chess and backgammon set (nardi). Its surface is engraved with patterns used in Armenian carpets, here arranged as a light tile pattern, while the chessboard’s coordinates appear in cast bronze.
Many Armenian rugs were made as dowry pieces. In Armenia, backgammon usually goes by the name nardi, and one board serves for long nardi and for short nardi alike. The game is believed to be among the oldest in the world and calls for flexible thinking, accurate calculation and decisive moves.
