In our workshop, this classic Memling carpet backgammon set (nardi) begins as one piece of beech, which is carved into a 60 cm (about 24 in) board and engraved with the image of an Armenian Memling carpet. Its other side is a draughts board.
Armenian carpets are admired throughout the world for their beauty, the originality of their ornament and the skill with which they are made. Since ancient times their designs have been rich in symbolism and secret meaning, and among their features is the cross-stone pattern, or khachkar motif. Here that heritage moves onto a board for two players.
