The form of this square wooden chess set echoes the game it is made for: an outer square of 30 cm (about 12 in) around a field of sixty-four smaller ones. Carved from one piece of beech, it has letters and numbers cut into the wood as well.
A wooden storage box keeps the pieces together between games. A compact square like this fits a windowsill, a bedside table or the corner of a desk, where a half-finished game can wait overnight. It also suits players who follow a game played online or by post and like to mirror each move on real wood.
