Worked from a single piece of beech, this 50 cm (about 20 in) rosette backgammon set (nardi) belongs to our classic line. Its engraved ornament shows a white rosette on a lattice oval.
Beech has a fine, even texture, which helps the engraving keep its detail. The design comes from Armenian ornament, which holds a great diversity of motifs, types and forms. On the back, hidden until the board is flipped, is a field for checkers (draughts). At 50 cm the set fits a small flat or a study, where a larger board might crowd the table.
