Plywood and beech wood are combined in this Hayastan backgammon set (nardi), a compact classic board of 40 cm (about 16 in). Its engraved subject is Armenia, and on the reverse the board offers a game of draughts.
Hayastan is what Armenians call their own country, a name often traced back to Hayasa and understood as “the country of Armenians”. In Hayastan, backgammon is usually called nardi, so the subject and the game sit naturally together on this board. For Armenians living abroad, a board with this subject is a small piece of home on the games table. The compact size suits a small table, a desk or a corner shelf.
