An engraved ornamental motif and a contour outline give this 40 cm (about 16 in) chess set its character, and the board is built from plywood and beech wood. Ornament as an art draws on a rich variety of motifs, types and forms; the one chosen here is cut into the surface of the board rather than applied on top.
In chess the outcome rests with the players alone, since every piece is in plain view and luck plays no part, so the game suits players of any age. At this middle size the set serves a parent showing a child the first moves just as well as two friends settling into a long game.
