A 40 cm (about 16 in) square of carved beech holds both games in this classic Ararat chess and backgammon set (nardi), and the whole board comes from a single piece of wood. Mount Ararat, after which the model is named, is its motif, and carved letters and numbers label the chessboard.
Armenia’s coat of arms carries Ararat too: its central shield shows the mountain with Noah’s Ark. Of the two games, backgammon, generally considered one of the oldest of all, is the one with dice, yet it remains a game of logic that rewards quick, flexible thinking and good judgement about which checker to move next. Its medium size keeps the set practical for everyday play at home.
