One piece of beech, a wood of fine and even texture, is carved into this compact classic chess set, 30 cm (about 12 in) across, with an expanded playing field. Its letters and numbers are cast in bronze rather than carved, so the metal marks every file and rank.
A small board earns its place where space is short, such as a student room, a kitchen corner or a holiday flat. The bronze letters and numbers are a help for anyone learning notation, the shorthand in which chess games are written down, since every square on the board has its own name. Each player still has the full sixteen pieces, so the small format takes nothing away from the game.
