Two materials shape the design of this circular chess set: beech, carved in one piece into a round board 30 cm (about 12 in) across and patterned with an ornamental weave, and bronze, in the form of studs set into the wood. Next to the interlacing lines of the weave, the studs add small points of metal.
Chess involves no dice and keeps nothing hidden, so everything a beginner needs to read a position lies in plain view on the board. That makes a compact set like this a good companion for a learner’s desk, and between lessons the weave and the studs turn it into a small decorative piece for a shelf. Its round outline also sets it apart from the square boards that most players meet first.
