Everything in this chess and backgammon set (nardi) starts with one piece of beech wood: the 50 cm (about 20 in) board, with its contour outline, is carved from it, and so are the letters and numbers of the chessboard. The chess pieces and backgammon checkers are made of beech and walnut, one pale and one darker wood.

Backgammon, often described as one of the earliest board games known, rests on logic and favours mental flexibility, an exact reckoning of the order of moves and the ability to decide quickly. Its aim is easy to state, to bear off all fifteen checkers before the opponent does, yet each roll of the dice opens a choice of routes. Chess, in the same set, is decided without any dice at all.
