On a large games table, this classic eternity sign chess and backgammon set (nardi) gives two players a 60 cm (about 24 in) board for both games. It is carved from one piece of beech wood and decorated with the sign together with further patterns, while its chess field carries letters and numbers in cast bronze.
Also known as arevakhach, the eternity sign is a whirling, sun-like wheel, and few motifs occur more often in Armenian architecture: it can be found carved into church walls, gravestones and khachkars. Backgammon is thought to be one of the oldest board games; it is a game of logic that rewards a flexible mind, careful planning of move sequences and quick decisions. Chess, with sixteen pieces per side, is played without any element of chance.
