Framed by an engraved ornamental border, this little classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) keeps its decoration within the surface: the pattern is cut into the wood rather than raised above it. Its board, 30 cm (about 12 in) across, is carved from a single block of beech.
A flexible mind, an accurate count of the moves to be made in turn and the ability to decide quickly: these are the qualities that backgammon, considered one of the world’s oldest games, asks of its players. Chess, by contrast, puts every piece in view and leaves no dice to blame. Small though it is, the set holds both games and fits easily on a balcony table or a bookshelf.
