One piece of beech wood is carved into this star-shaped chess set, 40 cm (about 16 in) across, and the carving extends to the letters and numbers that name its squares. The wood is naturally pale, in tones that range from straw to a light pinkish brown.
The star shape changes how the set looks, not how chess is played: the field still has sixty-four squares, and each player still begins with sixteen pieces. Those pieces are made of beech and walnut, the pale wood of the board set against a darker brown one. Its middle size lets it share a desk or a side table with other things instead of claiming the whole surface.
