Decoration on both sides is the idea behind this two-sided ornamental backgammon set (nardi): each face of the board is engraved with an Armenian ornament, from a tradition with a great variety of motifs, types and forms. The board itself, 60 cm (about 24 in) in size, is shaped from a single block of beech.
Both ornaments come from Armenian heritage, so the board brings that tradition to the table each time it is opened for a game. When friends come round, two players can open it out and settle into a long match of nardi, as backgammon is commonly called in Armenia.
