Straw-coloured beech, carved in one piece, forms this box-style chess set: a 40 cm (about 16 in) board that sits on its own box stand, with carving along the edges and on the legs. Its letters and numbers are also carved.
The top opens, and the space inside the stand takes the chess pieces, so they are never far from the game. Raised on its stand, the board sits a little higher than a flat set would, which suits a low coffee table in front of a sofa. Closed, it looks like a small carved chest on legs.
