Sized at 40 cm (about 16 in), this classic wooden chess set is a mid-sized board with an expanded playing field, carved from a single piece of beech. Its letters and numbers are cast in bronze, and the warm metal stands out against the pale wood.
Cast bronze coordinates are a small detail with a practical side: they mark the files and ranks in a material that differs from the board, so they are easy to pick out even in the middle of a game. Forty centimetres is a size that works as well on a writing desk as on a dining table, so the set need not have a fixed home.
