A braid pattern and a contour outline shape the look of this chess and backgammon set (nardi), and the 50 cm (about 20 in) board that carries them is carved from one piece of beech. In the braid, strands weave over and under one another; the contour outline is the second part of the design.
For chess, the files and ranks are labelled in cast bronze. Backgammon, which many count among the oldest games of all, is played with dice but decided by reasoning: it rewards flexibility, a precise count of how a run of moves will unfold and the readiness to commit quickly.
