Braid carving covers the whole surface of this chess and backgammon set (nardi), a 40 cm (about 16 in) board cut from a single piece of beech. The braid is an interlaced band of strands passing over and under one another, one of the many forms found in Armenian ornament, a tradition rich in motifs, types and patterns.
The letters and numbers marking the chessboard are cast in bronze. Backgammon, among the oldest games on record by common consent, turns on logic as much as on the roll: a supple mind, exact reckoning of a sequence of moves and prompt decisions are what it rewards. Because both games share the board, nobody has to fetch a second set when the mood shifts from chess to backgammon.
