A single piece of beech is carved into the round board of this circular chess set, which measures 30 cm (about 12 in) across. Its rim carries an engraved ornament that follows the curve of the board, so the decoration frames the game in a circle rather than a square.
Hard, dense beech suits a board that is handled game after game. Compact as it is, the set fits on a bedside table or a small café table, and its round outline has no corners to catch a sleeve. Between games it can lie on a shelf, where the engraved rim does the decorating.
