Square, 60 cm (about 24 in) on a side and 3 cm thick, this rococo backgammon set (nardi) gives two players a large field for a long game. Its board has a contour outline and is carved from a single piece of beech.
Backgammon is thought to rank among the oldest of all board games, and this set dresses the game in an ornamental pattern in the rococo manner, engraved straight into the beech. After the last backgammon game of the evening, the back of the board can take over, since it carries a checkers (draughts) layout. On a living-room table or a study desk, the set waits for either game.
