The 60 cm (about 24 in) format of this Tatev Monastery backgammon set (nardi) gives the engraving of an entire monastery complex plenty of room. The board is carved from one piece of beech, bears our copyrighted outline of Mount Ararat, and is set up for draughts on the reverse.
Tradition places the founding of Tatev in the fourth century. A legend tells of the master who built the monastery: when his work was finished, he asked God for wings, longing to fly up and view its beauty from the sky, and the request was granted. The name Tatev is said to mean “give wings”. Hrachya Ohanyan, whose name the workshop carries, is the author of the Ararat outline, a design used in our products since 2000.
Handcrafted from start to finish, each set is backed by a 25-year guarantee certificate. A set that gives game nights a story worth telling between rounds.
