Our workshop has carved this Scorpio zodiac backgammon set (nardi) from one piece of beech wood and engraved the sign of Scorpio, the scorpion, into it. The board, with its contour outline, is 60 cm (about 24 in) across, and on the back it turns into a checkers board.
The sign of Scorpio symbolises the ambition to win, a fitting motto for a backgammon board, although in this game the dice always have their say as well. Between games, the engraved sign gives the set a character of its own on a desk or a sideboard.
