This classic pomegranate tree backgammon set (nardi) takes its motif from a fruit that Armenian tradition holds up as a national emblem of life and plenty, one also linked with fertility. The tree is engraved on one side of the board, a single piece of beech worked to a size of 60 cm (about 24 in).
Rather than a single fruit, the engraving shows the whole tree, cut directly into the beech so that the grain of the wood runs through the picture. The back of the board is drawn up for a game of draughts, so a single set kept on a study shelf answers both kinds of visitor: those who reach for the dice and those who would rather play draughts.
