One piece of beech, a dense wood that wears well under constant play, goes into this pomegranate and grapes backgammon set (nardi) with a contour outline, 60 cm (about 24 in) across. On one side the fruits are engraved together; between them they speak of life, of prosperity, of abundance and of well-being.
Chance and skill both have their say in every game: the dice bring the surprises, and the players decide what to make of them. When the backgammon games are over, the reverse waits with a draughts board, so an evening with friends can carry on with a different kind of contest.
