A single piece of beech is carved into this pomegranate and grapes backgammon set (nardi), whose board measures 60 cm (about 24 in) and has an arch-style outline. On one side the two fruits are engraved together, both of them signs of life, abundance, prosperity and well-being, while the other side is planned for draughts.
Early medieval builders already paired the two fruits: carved pomegranates and grapevines decorated the cathedral of Zvartnots. Here they come with an arch-style outline on a board made for regular play, whether that means a game after work or a tournament among friends over a long weekend.
