Our workshop shapes this classic chess set from one piece of beech wood into a board of 60 cm (about 24 in), and one side is worked in bas-relief ornament combined with intricate elements. Ornamental patterns offer a wealth of motifs, types and forms; here the ornament is raised from the wood rather than drawn on it, work that suits the fine, even texture of beech.
Inside, the playing field is surrounded by carved grooves made to hold the chess figures, so the set keeps its own storage within the board. When it is closed, the bas-relief side is the one on view, and the set can rest on a sideboard or a library shelf until the next game.
