Ornament raised in bas-relief and worked together with more complex elements defines this classic ornamental backgammon set (nardi). Its patterns follow the Armenian decorative tradition, known for its range of motifs, types and forms, and they decorate a 60 cm (about 24 in) board made from one piece of beech.
Because the pattern stands above the surface rather than sinking into it, side light picks out its contours and gives the ornament depth. The back is put to use as well, as a board for draughts. At this size the set wants a proper table, a dining table or a cleared desk, and in return it gives two players a spacious field for long matches.
