The 60 x 60 x 3 cm (about 24 in) size of this bas-relief rosette backgammon set (nardi) leaves plenty of room for both the game and its ornament. Carved in one piece from beech, the classic model shows a rosette in bas-relief on a woven background, combined with other, more complex elements.
A rosette is a rounded motif that radiates from its centre; here it is raised in bas-relief above the woven ground, so motif and background sit at different depths. The other face, engraved with braid patterns, is meant for checkers. Backgammon itself joins the chance of the dice to the skill of two players, so even a short game rarely plays out the same way twice.
