One block of beech is carved into the board of this classic white rosette backgammon set (nardi), measuring 60 cm (about 24 in) and showing the wood in a natural finish. An ornamental braid is engraved at its centre, and a white rosette is part of the design too.
Armenian ornamental patterns are numerous and varied, in motif as well as in type and form, and the braid on this board is drawn from that tradition. Beech ranges from pale straw to a light pinkish brown, and the natural finish leaves that colour on show. On the back, players will find a field for checkers (draughts), handy in a family where the children are learning both games.
