Our workshop carves the whole board of this floral rosette backgammon set (nardi) from one piece of beech, a pale wood whose fine, even texture makes a quiet ground for engraving. It measures 60 cm (about 24 in) across, and one side carries an engraved Armenian ornament with a floral rosette.
Armenian ornament ranges over many motifs, types and forms, and this board draws on its floral side. Its back serves another game altogether, checkers. On a low table in a sitting room, the board gives two players a wide field and room for an unhurried match.
