Cut to 60 x 60 x 3 cm (about 24 in) from a single piece of beech, this classic backgammon set (nardi) carries a white ornament on a lattice background. At its centre, an ornamental braid is engraved and stands out in white against the lattice.
A lattice is a grid of crossing lines; as a background, it gives the white braid a patterned ground. The braid itself draws on Armenian ornament, a large family of motifs, types and forms. The underside of the board is designed for draughts (checkers).
