This classic walnut backgammon set (nardi) comes from a single carved piece of walnut, so the board, all 60 x 60 x 3 cm (about 24 in) of it, is warm brown wood with a usually straight grain, long a traditional choice for fine furniture. One side carries an engraved Armenian ornament.
The ornament comes from Armenian decorative art, where motifs, types and forms are many. The back takes the game in another direction: it is designed for checkers. On a sideboard among other walnut furniture, the set blends in until someone opens it for a game, and its wide field then gives two players all the room they need.
