Made for two players sitting across a coffee table or a games table, this octagram backgammon set (nardi), 60 cm (about 24 in) wide and with a contour outline, is worked from one piece of beech. On one of its sides, the wood carries an engraved octagram, a star with eight points.
The eight-pointed star appears in the art and culture of many peoples around the world, and here it gives the board a clear geometric motif. Backgammon mixes the chance of the dice with the skill of the players, and on a field this size neither player feels cramped. Turned the other way up, the board offers checkers (draughts), the game its back is designed for.
