Eternal life and Armenian national identity are the two ideas behind the eternity sign, and this backgammon set (nardi) carries it as its engraving. Its board, carved from one piece of beech, measures 60 cm (about 24 in) and has a varnished finish.
Its Armenian name is arevakhach, and its whirling, wheel-like form is at home far beyond game boards: it is carved into church walls and also appears in illuminated manuscripts. On the back, the board is ruled for draughts, for players who like to alternate between the two games.
