Solid wood, carved in one piece and inlaid with a second wood, forms this two-sided eternity backgammon set (nardi), a classic model 60 cm (about 24 in) across. Each of its two sides carries an engraved Armenian ornament, and the design combines the eternity sign with a braid motif and the inlay.
Armenian ornament is rich in motifs, types and forms. The eternity sign is among the most common of them in architecture, and medieval Armenian culture read it as a sign of eternal, heavenly life. Since both faces are engraved, the board shows ornament whichever way up it lies on a table or a shelf.
