Our workshop carves this carpet classic chess and backgammon set (nardi) from a single piece of beech and decorates it with engraved patterns from Armenian carpets. At 50 cm (about 20 in), the board leaves generous room for both games, and its chessboard is labelled in cast bronze, letters and numbers alike.
Armenian rugs did more than cover floors: they also decorated walls and furniture. Backgammon mixes the luck of the roll with skill, and as a game thought to be among the oldest known, it rewards quick, flexible thinking and careful calculation. Chess, for its part, is settled by thought alone.
