Lori-Pambak, a region in the north of Armenia, gave its name to a recognised carpet type, and this classic Lori-Pambak carpet backgammon set (nardi) is engraved with the image of such an Armenian carpet. Beech, carved as a single piece, forms its 60 cm (about 24 in) board.
Carpets of this type are typically arranged around a central medallion. Since ancient times, it is said, carpet patterns have held symbols and secret meanings, and the cross-stone pattern is among the hallmarks of Armenian carpets, which are known around the world for their ornament and the sophistication of their weaving. On its back, the board carries a second field, for draughts.
