Beech, a hard, dense wood with a straight grain, is carved in one piece to make this 60 cm (about 24 in) Lori carpet backgammon set (nardi). The image of an Armenian Lori carpet is engraved on its surface, and whoever prefers draughts simply turns it over.
Weavers are said to have often hidden secret messages in their patterns, and the cross-stone pattern is one of the features that set Armenian carpets apart. On a board this size, the fifteen checkers of each player have ample room as they travel around the twenty-four points.
