Worked from one piece of beech, this classic backgammon set (nardi) shows a wolf howling at the moon, engraved into a board 60 cm (about 24 in) wide. The scene gives the set its name and its night-time mood.
In the wolf, people see a symbol of strength and confidence, of endurance and freedom. The board lends itself to late games by lamplight, once the rest of the house has gone quiet and two players can settle in for as many rounds as they like, each one decided by the dice and by careful play. Should anyone want a change, checkers are waiting on the back of the board.
