Beech carved in one piece and a dark beeswax finish define this contour-outline deer backgammon set (nardi). The image of a deer is engraved into the 60 cm (about 24 in) board, and the dark wax gives the beech a deeper tone.
Beech takes a finish well, which suits a wax treatment like this one. The deer is often taken to embody majesty and nobility, grace and beauty, qualities that sit comfortably with the deeper colour of the board. As in every game of backgammon, victory goes to the first player to bear off all fifteen checkers. The back of the board belongs to another game entirely, being designed for draughts.
