Rococo, the name of a decorative style rather than of a single motif, describes the ornamental pattern engraved on this classic rococo backgammon set (nardi). Its board, 60 cm (about 24 in) across, is one carved piece of beech, so the pattern sits in solid wood rather than on a surface layer.
Among carved or period furniture, a board with rococo ornament looks entirely at home, whether in a drawing room or a study. Yet it is made for play, and hard, dense beech copes well with regular games. Two players share a field of twenty-four points, and the back, designed for draughts, offers a second game.
