Each checker in this backgammon (nardi) set measures 3 cm across and carries the coat of arms of Armenia, cast from aluminium–zinc alloy and bronze. The emblems are fixed to bases of beech and walnut wood, and velvet fabric covers the bottom of every piece so that the board’s surface is spared.
Adopted in the early nineteen-nineties, the coat of arms of Armenia shows Mount Ararat – Masis in Armenian – with Noah’s Ark on its central shield, while the four quarters around it carry the emblems of historic Armenian dynasties. An eagle and a lion hold the shield.
