On a family backgammon (nardi) board that comes out after dinner, these checkers bring a symbol from Armenian tradition into the game: each one carries a pomegranate cast from aluminium–zinc alloy and bronze. The fruit is fixed to a wooden base, and velvet fabric lines the bottom of every piece to protect the board.
The fruit is a national symbol in Armenian tradition, standing for life, abundance and prosperity, with a further link to fertility. Church builders, artists and the painters of manuscript miniatures all used it as ornament; at Zvartnots, an early medieval cathedral, carved pomegranates once appeared alongside grapevines.
