From one piece of beech, our workshop carves this classic Artsakh carpet backgammon set (nardi), a 60 cm (about 24 in) square board, and engraves it with a carpet in Artsakh motifs. A field for checkers occupies the back.
Since ancient times carpets have had their own symbolism and hidden meanings, and it is said that secret messages were often concealed in their patterns. One feature of Armenian carpets is the cross-stone pattern; the wheel of eternity and, once Christianity arrived, the cross became leading motifs in them. Armenians usually call the game nardi and play both a long and a short version of it on the same board.
