The 60 cm (about 24 in) format gives this classic backgammon set (nardi) a roomy board, carved out of one solid block of beech wood. Its engraving shows Mount Ararat, a national symbol of Armenia that many regard as a holy mountain. Of its two peaks, the greater is traditionally called Masis in Armenian and the smaller Sis.
Tradition holds that Noah’s Ark landed on Ararat once the Flood was over. The mountain stands in present-day Turkey, near the Armenian border, and is visible from Yerevan when the sky is clear. Beech is a hard, dense and hard-wearing wood, so the board suits daily games as well as display, and its playing field serves both long and short nardi, with draughts on the reverse.
Handcrafted from start to finish, each set is backed by a 25-year guarantee certificate. Suited to family evenings and to friends who meet regularly over a game of nardi.
