A coffee table or a desk is room enough for this classic backgammon set (nardi), which measures 50 cm (about 20 in), is carved from a single block of beech and has a draughts field on its back. The engraving on it is of Mount Ararat with its two peaks: Masis, the traditional Armenian name of the greater one, and Sis, the smaller.
Ararat is regarded as a national symbol of Armenia, and many hold it to be a holy mountain. By tradition it is where Noah’s Ark settled after the Flood, and the mountain is shown with the Ark on Armenia’s coat of arms. As for the game, every match mixes the luck of the dice with the skill of two players, and the first to bear off all their checkers wins.
